  • Overview

    Under general supervision, provides exceptional customer service, selling fare media, permits and products over-the-counter, by mail order, through a call center, and online. Responds to customer requests for transit information in person, by phone and in writing. Responds to customer lost and found inquiries. Works with vendors to distribute timetables, and other consumer and marketing materials. Responsible for maintaining internal and outlet inventory. Enters and retrieves data on sales, lost and found, and customer comments.

    Essential Duties

    • Responsible for over-the-counter, retail and mail order sales of transit passes, tickets and permits. Processes requests for refunds. Maintains sales logs, files and inventory records. Prepares daily cash sales reports and reconciles cash drawer. Receives, tracks and processes for disposition lost and found articles; responds to customer inquiries regarding lost items.
    • Provides accurate, detailed and timely responses to telephone inquiries from the general public for route and schedule information, fares, bus stop locations, transfer points and service or other changes as a result of construction, weather conditions or community events for Community Transit, and other local transit agencies. Provides information about Community Transit’s operational policy, procedures and general transit practices. Responds to customer requests for information on fares, schedules, agency operations, policies and procedures and other transit services. Diffuses angry customer situations.   Assists in customer complaint follow-ups, lost and found inquiries, and preparing customer mailings. Connects customers to the appropriate departments within the corporation in accordance with office policy and procedure.
    • Responsible for distributing, in person or by mail, consumer information and marketing materials to distribution outlets (internal and external) as assigned by supervisor. Sets up distribution route. Determines placement of materials within outlet. Determines outlet allocation and monitors usage. Assists in design of kiosks and racks. Modifies distribution routes as necessary.
    • Stocks and warehouses consumer information, transfers and marketing materials, ensuring proper storage and security. Maintains and records weekly inventory of stock in order to ensure adequate stock for the corporation and distribution outlets. Advises supervisor of stock requirements.
    • Enters and retrieves data utilizing a personal computer to record and monitor customer comments and responses for customer complaints, telephone system reports, departmental monthly reports, and other reports as required. Quickly and accurately documents customer information from the general public regarding complaints, service requests, commendations, surveys and general transit inquiries.
    • Assists Sales and Distribution Supervisor with clerical and administrative tasks.
    • Safely performs other duties of a similar nature or level.




    Two years of progressively responsible retail sales and customer service experience required. Post-secondary education in customer service, sales, merchandising, or bookkeeping may substitute for up to 18 months of experience. Must be bondable and pass credit check. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.  Availability to work holidays.




    Qualification to enter this position requires knowledge of the following:

    1. Knowledge in customer relations/service principles and practices.
    2. Knowledge in inventory and record keeping techniques and principles.
    3. Knowledge in Microsoft Windows and related desktop applications and features.
    4. Knowledge in retail sales.

    Preferred qualifications of  knowledge of the following:

    1. Knowledge in public transit.
    2. Knowledge in community Transit service areas, policies and procedures regarding transit fares, transfers, organization and pass/ticket/permit sales.
    3. Knowledge in Automatic Call Distribution System, basic call management telephone equipment including for the hearing impaired (TTY/TTD).

    Qualification to enter this position requires skill in:

    1. Skill in operating a cash register, point of sales PC, electronic calculator and other office machines.
    2. Skill in computer data entry and retrieval and database management techniques within a Windows environment (including Word and Excel).
    3. Skill in providing effective, courteous and professional customer service under stressful conditions and for diverse groups of individuals.
    4. Skill in communication and interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
    5. Skill in records maintenance and transaction recording.
    6. Skill in cash Handling.
    7. Skill in general math and accurate preparation of numeric reports and handling monies. 
    8. Skill in reading maps, schedules and small print materials.
    9. Skill in operating and entering and exiting company vehicle during frequent stops.
