Overview

As a Journey Body Person, you will perform major and minor structure repairs on various types of transit and support vehicles, both at the Operations Base and in the field during various shifts.  This is a full-time safety-sensitive position, subject to Federal Transit Authority (FTA) rules.  Pre-employment drug screening and random drug testing are mandatory.  This position reports to the Lead Body Person.

Essential Duties

  1. Perform journey-level major and minor body and structure repairs, such as replacing frames, doors, and panels on buses, trucks, vans, and automobiles.  Vehicle operation is required.

  2. Document all repairs and record labor hours on appropriate forms.

  3. Paint buses, trucks, vans, and automobiles, including preparing surfaces, matching, and spraying commercial finishes.

  4. Weld using oxygen-acetylene, MIG/TIG, and electric arc equipment.

  5. Replace windshields, glass, mirrors, and rubber moldings.

  6. Repair or replace seat frames, floors, and floor coverings.

  7. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4 years of experience as a journey-level bus, truck, van, or automobile body repairer and painter. A 2-year auto body technician degree from an accredited institution can substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license with an excellent driving record at the time of hire.
  • Able to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements within 90 days of hire.
  • Possession of a complete set of body repair tools and a roll-away toolbox at the time of hire.
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to ensure comprehension of instructions, safety guidelines, and other critical content, as well as document work performed.

An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in the bus, truck, van, and automobile body repair trade.
  • Mixing, matching, and spraying urethane and enamels.

Working Conditions

Your work will be performed in a shop environment, an office, and in the field. You will need to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Given the nature of this job, you will be exposed to fumes, odors, and dust, and may be required to work in noisy environments and varying weather conditions.  You will be required to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 15 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
