As Automotive Lead Journey Mechanic, you will oversee mechanical functions in the maintenance shop. 

Essential Duties

  1. Monitor the accuracy of completed work orders and time cards.  Ensure quality and quantity of work is maintained and notify management of work issues.

  2. Perform skilled mechanical tasks in diagnosing malfunctions, preventive maintenance, repair, and overhauling various types of equipment used within the agency, either in the field or at the maintenance facility.  Operation of vehicles is required.

  3. Oversee the work of equipment maintenance employees to ensure established standards, policies and procedures for work performance, and safety and security requirements are followed.  Work with Facilities Maintenance to ensure safe equipment and workspaces.

  4. Provide technical assistance to troubleshoot problems and determine the direction of repairs.

  5. Act independently on actions and decisions concerning the service, repair, and maintenance of agency diesel and gasoline powered vehicles.

  6. Assign work to Journey Mechanics.  Prioritize work assignments to ensure that operational needs are met.  Maintain special projects schedule to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.

  7. Assign and oversee work performed by the Vehicle Service Worker staff.  Coordinate vehicle availability.  Support PM compliance efforts.

  8. Determine which new parts are required and examine old parts to determine the cause of failure.  Work with the Parts department to source, order, receive, and surplus parts and other agency assets.

  9. Work with the Dart, Via/Zip and Vanpool teams to document and perform acceptance inspections and customization work with agency vendors to meet fleet expansion needs.  Support vehicle customization for Community Transit department needs.

  10. Support and inspect vendor-maintained vehicles. 

  11. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level, as needed.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible journey-level experience in vehicle maintenance including mechanical repair on diesel- or gas-powered equipment.
  • Possession of a complete set of heavy equipment Journey Level tools and a roll away toolbox.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a Washington State driver's license and a CDL license with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed.
  • Must be able to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.

An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures for vehicle maintenance and inspections.
  • Operation and maintenance functions of light to medium duty gas or diesel equipment.
  • Computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Health and safety hazards, precautions, and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Basic computer skills.

Working Conditions

 

90-100% of your work will be performed in a vehicle maintenance or heavy equipment maintenance shop environment.  You will need to operate maintenance tools and equipment, and standard office equipment and keyboards.  You will be required to move throughout and between different Maintenance shop buildings.  You must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.  You must also be able to work in an environment with grease, dust, dirt, chemicals, solvents, carbon monoxide, shop environment fumes, and diesel fumes from vehicles and machinery.  Some lifting more than 50 pounds is required.

This position is considered safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation and is subject to drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Community Transit authority.
