Overview

As a Maintenance Instructor, you will develop, research, and conduct training for new and existing employees.  This includes skills development, procedural instruction, safety, and required training.  You will write new curriculum and modify current curriculum, train mechanics on new equipment, and maintain records of training and instructional resources.  You will also monitor the effectiveness of the training programs.  Your primary responsibility will be instruction for maintenance crafts and coordinating craft apprenticeship programs.

Essential Duties

Research training subjects to develop course goals and objectives.  Develop curriculum and conduct classes to meet learning objectives.  Includes preparing hands-on and oral tests as appropriate.

 

Maintain and organize course content, instructional materials, and training aids.  Prepare and maintain related reports.

 

Coordinate technical training provided by vendors, schools, and other instructors with the Assistant Manager of Instruction – Maintenance or designee.  Evaluate and recommend purchase of training aids, materials, or programs.

 

Train employees on procedures of their assigned department and required training.  Includes scheduling training, arranging facilities, hands-on maintenance demonstrations, and operating vehicles.

 

Develop and conduct safety training and safety-related activities.  Assist in developing the industrial safety program.

 

Develop and monitor apprenticeship programs, as assigned.

 

Design methods to review and evaluate training programs for effectiveness.  Develop methods for improvement in training, procedures, or equipment.

 

Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • 5 years of experience in vehicle equipment maintenance, including but not limited to air brakes, air conditioning, diesel engines, programmable logic control equipment, heavy duty automatic transmissions, and advanced technologies in heavy duty vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct others, or a combination of training and experience in equipment maintenance that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Technical experience equivalent to heavy-duty vehicle mechanic.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license, CDL Class B with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction lifted by date of hire.
  • Knowledge of fleet software, such as Cummins Insite, Allison, ThermoKing, etc.
  • Professional experience with PC-based software such as MS Office, email, and scheduling applications.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire licenses or certifications specifically related to assigned areas of technical instruction.

 

An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

 

  • Associate degree in diesel technology, training, education, safety, or a related field.
  • Transit operations and bus systems experience.
  • Adult education techniques.
  • Federal and State Industrial Safety laws and regulations (OSHA, WISHA and DOT).
  • Federal and State laws and regulations regarding motor vehicles and public transportation.
  • Public transit vehicles and equipment, such as buses, vans, forklifts, and vehicle maintenance shop facilities.
  • Business policies and procedures.
  • Designing and conducting training programs and related lesson plans.
  • Vehicle or equipment repair procedures, including written manuals.
  • Experience with battery electric, hydrogen electric or hybrid technologies.

Working Conditions

Your work will be performed in an office, classroom, outdoors or in a shop environment with exposure to noise, grease, dirt, and fumes.  You may be required to wear a respirator or other personal protective equipment and clothing.  You will be required to move throughout and between different buildings and may need to complete tasks in noisy environments.  You will be required to lift and carry training materials and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.  Conducting presentations may require standing and walking for sustained periods.

This position is considered safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation and is subject to drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Community Transit authority.
